This chart illustrates the evolution of New Jersey's first highway numbering system. The Year and the corresponding Public Law chapter indicate when the route was first legislated. 1927 was the year of the First (official) Renumbering and therefore the beginning of a new highway numbering system which was not to significantly change again until 1953.
The 1926 numbers in italics were from the proposed 1926 renumbering but were never officially used, although those numbers do appear on some Annual Reports.
